Todos merecen una experiencia de viajar sin dinero. Te hace saber que todo se puede sin dinero. Aprendimos que uno es libre. No es un impedimento para llegar a cualquier lado, hay otros métodos. Uno puede ir a la ciudad que quiera.
Everyone deserves an experience of traveling without money. It lets you know that one can do anything without money. We learned that one is free. It’s not an impediment to get to anywhere, there are other ways. One can go to any city one wants to.
Somos Diego y Nacho. ¡La sensación de Valpo!
NACHO: Diego se iba a ir de viaje y yo había dejado la universidad. No tenía nada que hacer po. Me fui a mochilear con él sin nada de plata, con un poquito de marihuana. (Pero poquito.)
NACHO: Diego was going to travel and I had dropped out of college. I didn’t have anything to do. I went backpacking with him without any money, with a little bit of marijuana. (Just a little.)
Y nos fuimos a viajar. Diego sabía hacer artesania. Un par de flores con pañuelos desechables. Con eso vivíamos de colaboración voluntaria. Y vivimos allí en las plazas, en las playas.
And we set off traveling. Diego knew how to make handicrafts. A pair of tissue paper flowers. We lived off of that through donations. And we lived out there in the plazas, on the beaches.
Después aprendimos cómo hacer malabares, y empezamos a hacerlo en los semaforos. Y resultó, salió bien. La gente nos aplaudía y eso igual nos motivaba. Salía un par de lucas y seguimos no más. Al final es como un juego. Si no tienes malabares o juguetes, comprai tres naranjas y haci malabares. Podi empezar a crear algo de la nada!
Later we learned how to juggle, and we began doing it in the stoplights. And it turned out well. People applauded us and that motivated us. A few bucks came out of it and we kept going. In the end, it’s like a game. If you don’t have juggling pins or toys, you buy three oranges and use those. You can start to make something from nothing!
El semáforo es un escenario más po. Es un escenario que puede servir de compraventa, para vender artículos, o pa’ presentar arte. Lo hace los músicos. Artistas circenses. Bailarines de cueca. He visto a gente jugar con trompos en los semaforos. Jugar fútbol. Disfraces. Limpia vidrio. Es un escenario más, y es piola trabajar allí.
The stoplight is just one more stage. It’s a stage that can serve for buying and selling, for selling articles, or performing art. The musicians do it. Circus artists. Cueca dancers. I’ve seen people play with spinning tops in the stoplights. Playing soccer. Costumes. Washing car windows. It’s just one more stage, and it’s neat to work there.
Estábamos en Potosi en Bolivia. Habíamos conseguido San Pedro: mescalina, cactus, peyote…Y nos fuimos al Ojo del Inca. Es un cráter de un volcán. Como cuatro mil seiscientos de altura. ¡Heladisimo! ¡Pero con firmamento de estrellas, pero loco! Éramos los tres en la noche, y el agua era termal, y bañándonos desnudos, saltando en San Pedro, ¡loco! Fue un lugar mágico.
We were in Potosi, Bolivia. We’d gotten San Pedro: mescaline, cactus, peyote…And we went to Ojo del Inca. It’s a volcano crater. Like four thousand six-hundred meters altitude. Cold as fuck! But with a firmament of stars, just crazy! We were three of us in the night, and the water was thermal, and we swam nude, tripping on San Pedro, crazy! It was a magical place.
DIEGO: Me acuerdo de Copacabana en Bolivia. Vivíamos en la playa. Dormíamos en la hamaca, y todas las noches veíamos tormentas eléctricas en el Lago Titicaca. Así se encendía toda la noche.
DIEGO: I remember Copacabana in Bolivia. We lived on the beach. We slept in a hammock, and every night we’d see electric storms on Lake Titicaca. They lit up the whole night.
Allí no hay semáforos. Así que íbamos a los restaurantes y ayudamos a las mamitas sacar las mesas y las sillas toda la mañana, y después a entrarlas todas las tardes. Nos daban un plato de comida en cada puesto donde lo hacíamos.
Out there there aren’t any stoplights. So we would go to the restaurants and help the little old ladies take out the tables and chairs all morning, and afterwards bring them in every afternoon. They’d give us a plate of food in every place where we’d do it.

Después te das cuenta de que hay un montón de gente que sí está viajando así. Sólo que tú cuando estás en un lugar estable no lo ves casi, pero cuando andaí moviendo allí un montón de gente en todos lados…
Afterwards, you realize that there are a ton of people that do travel like that. It’s just that when you’re in a stable place you almost don’t see it, but when you get moving, out there there’s a ton of people all over the place.
