En Latinoamérica siempre hemos tratado de ser como los estadounidenses o los europeos. Nos han enseñado que lo bueno es gastar, el capitalismo…Entonces algo que es importante para mí es el desarrollo sustentable. Tienes que mantener equilibrada la sociedad, la economía y la ecología del planeta. Todos en un conjunto.
In Latin America we’ve always tried to be like Americans or Europeans. They’ve taught us that the right thing to do is to spend, capitalism…So something that’s important to me is sustainable development. You have to keep the planet’s society, economy and ecology balanced. Everything as one whole.
Mis maestros me decían que tenía que enseñar a mis alumnos un modelo americano de desarrollo sustentable. El cual realmente no puede existir, porque el desarrollo sustentable es contrario al capitalismo. El capitalismo es libertad de tomar el dinero y recursos que uno pueda, y el desarrollo sustentable habla del equilibrio.
My teachers told me that I had to teach my classmates an American model of sustainable development. Which in reality can’t exist, because sustainable development is contrary to capitalism. Capitalism is the freedom to take all the money and resources that one can, and sustainable development speaks of balance.
Entonces, yo lo que hice fue cambiar ese planteamiento para poder cambiar la perspectiva de los alumnos. Bajo un proyecto que yo diseñe, buscamos el GDP, la huella ecológica, y la felicidad general de todos los países. Eso incluye valores de salud, de felicidad, de tranquilidad, tasa de suicidios, et cetera. Lo analizamos haciendo una ecuación sencilla, poniendo en alto la capacidad que tiene uno de tener alto GDP, alta felicidad, y baja huella ecológica.
Nos dimos cuenta que muchos países en Latinoamérica y Asia están por encima de Estados Unidos y otros países europeos. Sobre todo, el caso del República Dominicana fue muy impresionante porque uno piensa que es un país subdesarrollado, pero se encontraba en los primeros diez lugares. A lado de Suecia, de Finlandia.
So what I did was change that approach in order to change the students’ perspective. Under a project that I designed, we researched the GDP, ecological footprint, and general happiness of every country. That includes measures for health, happiness, peacefulness, suicide rate, et cetera. We analyzed it using a simple equation, valuing above all else the capacity a country has for high GDP, high happiness, and low ecological footprint.
We realized that many countries in Latin America and Asia are above the United States and other European countries. In particular, the case of the Dominican Republic was very impressive because one thinks of it as an underdeveloped country, but it was in the first ten places. Next to Sweden, to Finland.
Fue muy bonito ver que países, como Luxemburgo—que uno cree que es un país de primer mundo—se iba a la mitad de la tabla. Estados Unidos se iba abajo de la tabla, porque gastan mucho dinero y recursos, y la gente no es feliz en general. Eso te está hablando de que no sólo el dinero es importante sino también la felicidad—de cómo uno ve su país, cómo a uno le gusta vivir en su país con todo su cultura y su sociedad. No ha fuerza tratar de ser algo que no eres.
It was really nice to see that countries, like Luxembourg—which one thinks of as a first world country—went down to the middle of the table. The United States went way down the table because they spend a lot of money and resources, and people aren’t happy in general. This is all to say that not only money is important, but also happiness—how you view your country, how you like living in your country with all its culture and society. There’s no need to try to be something that you’re not.
¡Es muy interesante pensar que los latinoamericanos podríamos tratar de ser más como somos! Ser más como latinoamérica, que nos gusta mucho, y dejar de tratar ser algo que no somos. Eso ayudaría tanto al planeta como a nuestra sociedad, y a darnos identidad como latinoamericanos, que a veces perdemos por querer ser como estados unidenses y europeos.
It’s very interesting to think that as Latin Americans we could try to be more like ourselves! To be more like Latin America, which we like a lot, and stop trying to be something that we’re not. That would help the planet as much as it would our society, and give us an identity as Latin Americans, which we sometimes lose by wanting to be like Americans and Europeans.
