The Latest Incident

Today around 6

in the Sunday afternoon,

a man attended a birthday party.

He is said to have been drinking

a beer and

relaxed

as he opened fire.

Now around 9

in the Sabbath dark

we pace

and pray for the 8

hospitalized, whose names

we are afraid to know,

whose lives we hope

have withstood bullets.

We grieve, clumsily.

We wait for news

call home

lock doors

fold clothes

pack lunches for tomorrow

with guilty gratitude.
